What a brilliant article. I am in similar situation in one or 2 positions. Really need find those economic moats. Or stocks which can endure economic cycles.
true. it's funny I bought Berkshire b, as my first (single stock) in 2010, and still hold and now about 7% of the portfolio. I felt always more secure to hold that, and my endeavor in oil companies cost me asan example :(. A really timely piece, cheers.
Thank you very much Mark, I hope you are well. I can't complain too much, as aside from this it's been a good year overall for the portfolio. Hope yours is going well too!
Yes, it's been a good year for me too. This last week has been especially cheering after a miserable September & October. Through bitter experience, I avoid gaming stocks, especially smallcap ones, so managed to dodge this particular bullet. Still manage to get hit by plenty of others, though.
I will wait for completion of this year before posting my scores on the doors, winners and losers.
Nicely written Mr Miserly , thanks for sharing the downside as well as the upside. I'm quite sure you will recoup that 3.5% in the months to come , given your skils and GAW of course.
Any success I'm having is for the most part (99%) , down to the discovery of fintwit back in 17/18 . Ideas , commentary and insights into running a pf etc.
One of the best of those insights came from your good self in '2018 , which I can boil down to don't panic and sell during major turmoil. Fast fwd to Mar 2020 and that tip/insight gave me a +16% at end of last year, a year in which I'd have been happy to finish flat at the time.
Interesting you chose BOTB to write about as about 2 weeks ago I think the penny finally dropped in my brain as to what operational gearing is! , I am just a builder bloke after all.😁
Great blog!!I have also been on the same sad BOTB journey so feel the pain, I managed to sell out end of July but still a thumping loss! The shares look cheap now but I’m not tempted
We all get it wrong at times and will continue to get it wrong in the future, keeping those to a minimum is key.
Thank you for writing this. Very helpful.

Thank you very much Joe. Good luck with finding the true moats - it's not always easy...

Wonderful prose, Miserly - a really enjoyable read. Commiserations on your loss.
